Property – January 2015

property-ministry

Our property team is busy! They have been working diligently on their list of 63 items to repair, and through concerted effort, they are down to 20. Items come up as often as they get checked off, so it’s a constant effort to keep going. They could use more skilled people to call on, so let one of them know if you can offer any assistance!

Many people ask about our boiler, and we are told it should last a few more years. It is probably a good idea to start saving for the $20,000 repair.

This past year, we were given a special financial gift for media items. We have used this to purchase a television for the fireside room, which allowed us to move TVs around and upgrade the television in children’s ministry. We also purchased a couple of computers and some network equipment. We are looking into other things that might need upgrade or replacement.

God helps us and enables our willing hands!

Consistory – January 2015

consistory-communication2

Consistory members attended a Workshop on Saturday, January 11th, along with staff members and the pastor search committee. Our classis representative, Pastor Tim Meendering, led us in a time of reflection on how Rockford Reformed Church can grow into a church of intentional discipleship. We are grateful for his leadership now that Pastor David is enjoying sunny skies and warmth. We are excited to see what 2015 brings for Rockford Reformed Church. Please pray for that leader that God has already chosen as our next pastor.

In the absence of a pastor, Dianne Bennett has graciously agreed to lead staff meetings and provide support to staff until we have a pastor in place. We are grateful to Dianne, as this will give them consistency and an experienced resource.

You may have a new elder/deacon team for your care group. Make a point of getting acquainted with them and provide input throughout the year to them. Be sure to affirm you are in the same care group as a few folks were moved or added.

Pastor Ken Westrate will continue to make hospital visits when needed. Your elder/deacons teams are your first line of support for other needs. To avoid confusion, here are the ways you can seek help:

  • Call your elder/deacon team OR
  • Whenever the church office is open, you may continue to contact Marcia (866-2308) with your updates or needs. She immediately sends an email to your elder/deacon team stating the situation and lets Pastor Ken know when appropriate. In emergencies, she will make needed phone calls.
  • At other times (such as evenings and weekends) we offer two options. Call your elder or deacon first. If they do not answer, call our VP of consistory, Scott Brownell. His phone number is 616-866-6570. If you have any concerns or needs not being met, please contact Scott.

We have assigned all consistory members to a ministry team as a liaison between the team and consistory. Some teams are well established and some will be formed in the next year. We will post ministry team assignments on the bulletin board at the back of the church.

The Human Resources Committee has just been formed and will soon address the need for a permanent Youth Director. Lyn Peterman (chair), Dianne Bennett, and Eric Ringnalda make up the core committee. They will be working on forming a search team for the YD position.

Pastor Ben Ingebretson will preach for RRC, on his discipleship series, until March 1. Once we have additional information for March and beyond, we will let you know.

Nancy Steenwyk and Karen Bazen will be forming this new committee and eventually move into a liaison role to the consistory. The committee is being formed to focus efforts on opportunities for the spiritual growth and fellowship of our adults. Areas of programming include adult Sunday School classes, Wednesday night classes, small group Bible studies, small group dinners, and other seasonal programming. Some of these functions were previously done by the Pastor or Admin Board or even other members of the congregation. Nancy and Karen will be solidifying the scope of the committee as well its members after the end of March. If anyone in the congregation has ideas or suggestions for adult programming, please contact Nancy or Karen. Your input would be appreciated!

Youth Ministry – January 2015

youth-ministry

Welcome to 2015! Break is over and things are starting up again at Rockford Reformed Church. Tuesday Bible Studies are beginning, Youth Groups are meeting, and Sunday School will resume at its usual time; but its the calm after the Christmas Season, and its too often a time when I go back to my normal routine and forget that we just celebrated the hope for the world. It is my prayer for you and your families this year that this hope would shine in our actions and conversations with those we come in contact with at home, at school, at work, and at church. This New Year holds so many possibilities, may Christ’s light shine in you in a special way this year.

With the New Year comes a new opportunity. On Tuesdays we will still be having our Girls Bible Study (same time and place), and we will be adding to Tuesdays a High School/Middle School Guys Bible Study as well. Rob will be leading this Bible Study and it will meet at the Rockford McDonald’s from 3-4pm. If you would like more information, contact either Rob or Jess.

January Calendar:

February Calendar:

  • 4:  No MS Youth Group or HS Small Groups – meet at Pando
  • 11: No MS Youth Group – retreat prep
  • 13-15: MS Winter Retreat – at Cran-Hill Ranch

Parents’ Tip:

As many of you are aware, there are many harmful apps, websites, etc. that our students are exposed to, and its hard to keep track of what’s what on their phones. Here is an article that I found helpful in learning what some of these apps are, and why they might be harmful.

Parents must sign a waiver, and ticket money is due no later than February 1 (ages 11 and older are $12, ages 10 and under are $10).

We recently finished our unit on Friends. Children learned that true friends care for and help each other, and that Jesus sets the perfect example. We learned that we can forgive our friends because God forgives us, and that Jesus wants us to reach out and include everyone. Finally, we also learned that our friends influence us, and we need to be able to evaluate whether their influence is good or bad, so we can say yes to the good and no to the bad.

In our next unit, we will talk about what it means to be in God’s family. Keep this page handy – the memory verses are listed below:

In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish. Matthew 18:14 (learn by January 28)

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Matthew 7:24 (learn by February 11)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 (learn by February 18)

Outreach – January 2015

 outreach-ministry

Ephesians 2:10. It was God Himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ago he planned that we should spend these days in helping others.

Do you have a heart for helping others, a heart for reaching out to the poor, the orphans, the widows, and those who do not yet know Jesus Christ? If so God has given you a heart of service and compassion.

I would like to invite you to please prayerfully consider if God is calling you to use your talents by joining the newly forming Outreach Team.

If you feel God is leading you in this direction and would like to serve RRC and the surrounding community in this valuable way, please contact Lisa DeBoer at 616-560-6220 or email ladinteriors@hotmail.com.

P.S. On Friday, March 6 & Saturday, March 7, Corinth Reformed Church in Byron Center will be offering an Outreach training event. This event will equip us to learn how to share the love and message of Jesus Christ in natural ways that fit who we are. I will be going and would love to have you join me. Early bird sign-up is January 31. Please let me know if you are interested.
