Missions – June 2015

The Missions Team is preparing to send four members from Rockford Reformed Church to Haiti on July 14. Rachel and Ryan DeKuiper, Emily DeWitte, and Bren Shantz will be working alongside the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty this summer. Donation baskets will be available at the back of the sanctuary starting this Sunday. Your donations and prayers are greatly appreciated by the team and our dear friends in Haiti.  Thank you in advance for helping us be His hands and feet in Haiti. Consistory – June 2015

Our Summer Worship time is 9:30 a.m. The new schedule will run through September 6, Labor Day weekend. Be sure to help spread the word to your neighbors and friends.

Will you be gone for some Sundays this summer? If so, you are encouraged to send your donation envelopes to the church. Financial gifts generally decline over the summer while people are on vacation or at cottages, and it would be helpful to have a steady amount of money coming in to meet financial obligations that occur year-round.

After Service Socials will be held after the 9:30 a.m. services throughout the summer. It is easy to host – keep it simple with some cookies, coffee, and juice drink. There are several weeks still available for families or groups in the congregation to take a turn at hosting the social. Costs will be reimbursed from church funds (so keep your receipts). If you are interested in hosting, please contact Laura Jolliffe.

VBS is coming up quickly! Each evening from July 26 – 29, 6-8 p.m., kids from age 3 through having completed the 5th grade are invited to learn about conquering challenges with God’s Mighty Power. If you are able to help out during some or all of those evenings, please contact Beth Jennings or sign up via the e-mail link in recent e-Beacons.

Relief Donations are still being received for Nepal. Nepal, India, and Tibet were devastated by recent earthquakes. You can help bring aid to this area of the world with prayer and financial giving. RCA Global Mission is teaming with World Vision to bring relief. Giving can be done by donating online directly to the RCA (https://www.rca.org/news/rca-responds-nepal-earthquake), or by placing a clearly marked envelope in the offering plate any Sunday until the end of June.

Adult Ministry – June 2015

It is the start of summer, but the Adult Ministries Committee is already thinking about Fall and what classes will be offered for the Sunday School hour and for Wednesday night studies. We want to give opportunities for people to grow in the knowledge of Christ and in fellowship with other Christians.

Volunteers for teaching some of the classes have graciously come forward and we anticipate offering a variety of class topics. If you are not already in a small dinner or Bible study group, there will be an opportunity to join one, so be thinking about that. You will be able to sign up for classes and activities at the Fall Festival, planned for September 13.

As a new committee, we are determining the scope of groups/activities for our committee to oversee. Our church has many groups and activities and we distinguished between outreach activities and social activities before coming up with the following:

  • Wednesday adult groups
  • Small groups – dinner and Bible study
  • Adult fellowship group & singles group
  • Men’s prayer breakfast
  • Men’s mentoring group
  • Saturday men’s and boy’s group
  • Women’s Bible study – several groups
  • Women’s lenten morning
  • Community ladies day
  • Church library

If you are a leader for one of these groups, our committee would like to be a resource for you, to help promote the group and, if needed, help find study materials. We also want to be aware of what each group is teaching – the topic or name of the book, etc., when you meet, and how to join the group. When new people come to church, we want to be able to “plug them” into a group if they desire that. Knowing who to contact and what is being taught would help us to do that. One of the committee will be connecting with the leaders of each group this summer. Please let us know if we can help you.

Colossians 1:9-11 (NIV)

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience…

Youth Ministry – June 2015

Hello! My name is Brian Ellis and I am the new youth director at Rockford Reformed Church. I am very excited about the opportunity to begin working with the youth group and would like to take a moment to tell you a little about myself. My parents, sister, and I have lived in Rockford my entire life, and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this community. I am an avid sports fan and enjoy watching, playing, or talking about a variety of sports. I am also interested in outdoor activities such as camping and kayaking. Currently I am a senior at Kuyper College where I study youth ministry. I have been gaining youth ministry experience for the last 5 years, 4 of which were as an intern. Over that time my passion for youth ministry has continued to grow. I love having a job that allows me to walk alongside our youth as they explore their life and their faith. I look forward to getting to know you all!

Our first event of the summer, the Middle School bonfire, went well with over 20 kids in attendance. The High School bonfire is scheduled for July 22, location still to be determined.

Children’s Ministry – June 2015

Caravan Kids have finished another wonderful year of Sunday school! We enjoyed learning about Who Jesus Is, focusing on Matthew 16:15 – “Who do you say that I am? You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” The kids really enjoyed some of our large group lessons, like Unfrozen and What does the Bible Say? It was a fun year with really great kids! We also graduated 9 fifth graders!

There are some summer events in the works, the biggest one being Vacation Bible School. The theme this year is Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power. We are looking for volunteers, middle school through adults!

We are looking forward to hosting two events for 3rd through 5th graders as well. We are planning for one in June and one in August. They will be held on a Wednesday evening, plan to bring your friends and have fun! Watch your inbox for more information. As always if you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Beth Jennings.

Outreach – June 2015

Have you ever wondered why God draws people to a particular church? Have you ever asked yourself why God would draw people to RRC? Have you ever been apprehensive about inviting a friend or neighbor to church? Has it ever crossed your mind that God might actually keep people from attending a particular church, even Rockford Reformed Church?

The Outreach team has been studying the book Organic Outreach for Churches by Kevin Harney. During the last two meetings we have been discussing and contemplating these very important questions and how they relate to each of us personally and to Rockford Reformed as a church.

Matt. 22:37-40  To those who asked him what matters most to God, Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Loving God and loving others are the two big hooks on which everything hangs. When we think of outreach, love must be the foundation and our motivating factor. Jesus made it clear that love is our starting point for everything. “If we fail to love God, he will not draw people to our congregation. When we love God passionately, he will entrust people to our congregation so we can lavish them with His love and grace.” (Kevin G. Harney, Organic Outreach for Churches)

As a church we need to seriously ask ourselves: Does our heart, as a church, beat with the love and compassion of the living God? Can people see our compassion? Can they feel it? Are we fulfilling God’s call to lavish him, each other, and our neighbors with love?

SATURDAY, JUNE 13 we have the opportunity to invite our friends and neighbors to watch the fireworks from the hill at RRC. This is a non-threatening way for our church family to show the love we have for God and for His people. Please say a prayer and invite your friends! We hope to see you there!

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU: We have a great opportunity for the person or persons who has the gift of video-taping and editing. Our hope is to video-tape testimonies of God’s goodness and grace in the lives of our church family so that we can use them to encourage and inspire people within RRC and those outside our doors. Please email Lisa DeBoer at ladinteriors@hotmail.com or call 616-560-6220 if God is calling you to be part of this exciting opportunity.
