Youth Ministry – April 2016

youth-ministry

With only a couple months left before we break for summer we are tremendously pleased with the direction that our ministry is headed.

Parent’s Tip: Let your student know you are proud of them. In our performance-based society we can sometimes focus on earning the love of the people around us. For a student to hear they are loved unconditionally can go a long way.

What We’re Studying: We are studying the 7 signs in the gospel of John. John refers to these miracles as “signs” because they communicate something about who Jesus is.  We are learning what those signs tell us about Jesus and how they impact our faith today.

What’s Coming Up

  • Middle School Summer Mission Trip July 31-August 6
  • High School Summer Mission Trip June 12-18

Other Opportunities:

  • If you are looking for ways to get involved, the youth ministry has needs for volunteers outside of being a small group leader. From making snacks to driving vans, there are plenty of ways to help out.
  • One of our biggest needs at the moment is for adults who would be interested in hearing more about being a small group leader next year.

What We’re Studying: The Bible is a big story about how God rescues His people. God loves us and through the Old and New Testaments, He has a good news message for us. RRCYM is working through a study called “Continuum” where we are learning about the story of the Bible and what it means for our lives. It is an 8 week series that digs into these main points:

  1. In the beginning a good God created a good world that reflected how good He is.
  2. When sin entered the world, everything was broken, but God didn’t abandon His creation.
  3. God initiated a promise with His people even though they didn’t deserve it.
  4. No matter what Israel did or didn’t do, God never deserted His people or His promise.
  5. God fulfilled what He promised in Jesus, who demonstrated a new way to live.
  6. Jesus gave His life to rescue those who put their faith in Him.
  7. Jesus Christ defeating death proved God had a plan since the beginning.
  8. Jesus’ followers shared His message of love with the world.

Parent’s Tip: If you are reading through any scripture consider sharing what you are learning with your child. It is a powerful thing for our youth to see the adults of the congregation learning and growing like they are.

What We’re Studying: God’s Word is powerful. It has the power to transform our hearts and our lives. RRCYM is currently doing a study called “Alive” in which we are learning about just how powerful, valuable, and vital the Bible is in our relationship with God. The 3-week series digs in to these 3 main points:  1) Give God’s Word a chance to change you; 2) Find a way to feed yourself spiritually; 3) When you memorize, it opens your eyes.

If you are looking to learn more about our youth ministry, I encourage you to “like” the student ministry Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RRCYM), or request to be a part of our weekly emails by contacting Brian Ellis (brianmellis@outlook.com).

What’s Coming Up?

MIDDLE SCHOOL

  • Youth Group is on Wednesday nights from 6:30 – 8:00 pm
  • Girls Bible Study (Middle & High School) on Tuesdays from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at Family Fare
  • Afternoon at Sky Zone on Saturday, October 24
  • Youth Group fundraiser dinner after second service in the gym, November 1
  • No Youth Group (Thanksgiving) on Wednesday, November 25

HIGH SCHOOL

  • Youth Group is on Sunday nights from 6:30 – 8:00 pm

  • All-Nighter at the 3 Mile Project Friday, November 6 – Saturday, November 7
  • No Youth Group (Thanksgiving) on Sunday, November 29

Parent’s Tip: I encourage you to share the story of how you became a Christian with your child. Hearing the influential pieces of a parent’s testimony can often help a child identify the meaningful aspects of their own faith. A child will often pay very close attention to the faith of a parent so sharing testimonies or favorite Bible verses can be impactful for the faith of a child.

What We’re Studying: We are studying the life of King Solomon and how his life can teach us to walk on a path that leads to God.

Other Opportunities: If you are looking for ways to get involved, the youth ministry has needs for volunteers outside of being a small group leader. From making snacks to driving vans, there are plenty of ways to help out.

Youth Ministry – June 2015

youth-ministry

Hello! My name is Brian Ellis and I am the new youth director at Rockford Reformed Church. I am very excited about the opportunity to begin working with the youth group and would like to take a moment to tell you a little about myself. My parents, sister, and I have lived in Rockford my entire life, and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this community. I am an avid sports fan and enjoy watching, playing, or talking about a variety of sports. I am also interested in outdoor activities such as camping and kayaking. Currently I am a senior at Kuyper College where I study youth ministry. I have been gaining youth ministry experience for the last 5 years, 4 of which were as an intern. Over that time my passion for youth ministry has continued to grow. I love having a job that allows me to walk alongside our youth as they explore their life and their faith. I look forward to getting to know you all!

Our first event of the summer, the Middle School bonfire, went well with over 20 kids in attendance. The High School bonfire is scheduled for July 22, location still to be determined.
